Sarah Bofenkamp
Energized by the green green green of my Michigan summer, I followed the smell of mold to the ever-magical Gwen Frostic studio. With the help of Kelly, Mary, Charlie, and team, I was able to catalogue much of what remains of one of America's best nature libraries. An honor and an inspiration.
Another summer at the Sawbill, another chance to read and see and breathe the air of Ocean Michigan. Elberta helped to slow the spin of space: where I spent my time exploring again the dark corners of Gwen Frostic Studio, disdaining Jim Harrison, and wanting more blue for us all.
This was the year I knew I would always return to Michigan. This was the late summer that neighbors stopped by with salmon and squash, that Mary invented Surround Sound at the Sawbill, that we saw Kelly fly, and that the lights were on in the Gwen Frostic Library. 2024 was the year where I read the big summer blockbusters from the beach, and found that being here was still better.
Sarah J. Bofenkamp is a reader, writer, civic servant, freelance librarian, rural queer, and neighborhood dreamer.
